Rural Tourism

Rural Tourism

Madhya Pradesh is a state rich in cultural and natural resources, with a significant portion of its population residing in rural areas. This creates a great opportunity to promote Rural Tourism, a niche market that fosters strong emotional connections between tourists and local communities. Rural tourism enables preserving the local culture and heritage while offering an authentic rural experience. The state is divided into six cultural regions: Baghelkhand, Bundelkhand Chambal, Malwa, Nimad, and Mahakaushal, each with its own unique traditions, customs, food, dialects, and art forms. Through rural tourism, visitors can enjoy the rural lifestyle, including traditional food, crafts, local sports, and eco-friendly practices. Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board has initiated a Rural Tourism Project in 125 villages to provide tourists with genuine and immersive experiences.

The primary goals of this project is to increase tourism by showcasing cultural experiences, improve local living standards, promote sustainable tourism, and preserve the state’s rich cultural and environmental resources. Additionally, it aims to support rural livelihoods by highlighting local handicrafts and ancient arts, ensuring gender and social equality, and increasing the number of tourists and overnight stays in the state.

The key components of Rural and Tribal Tourism in Madhya Pradesh are designed to enhance both tourist experiences and local livelihoods:

  1. Convenient Stay in Villages: Homestays offer a comfortable stay with modern amenities while maintaining the charm of vernacular architecture. These accommodations allow guests to experience traditional village life and interact with local communities.
  2. Local Cuisine: Each cultural zone has its own distinctive cuisine, prepared using locally sourced ingredients. This provides tourists with a rich culinary experience while creating livelihood opportunities for local families.
  3. Local Excursions: Tourists can explore rural landscapes, participate in traditional activities, and visit nearby cultural landmarks, enhancing their immersive experience.
  4. Local Culture: Madhya Pradesh's six cultural zones each have unique traditions, folk songs, dances, and customs. The mission focuses on promoting these practices to build local pride and offer enriching experiences for visitors.
  5. Art and Craft Promotion: The initiative supports local artisans, particularly women and youth, by promoting traditional crafts. This helps diversify the local economy, preserve cultural heritage, and generate income through handicrafts and souvenirs.
  6. Skilling, Certification, and Employment for Youth: The mission provides skill development and training to improve employment prospects in tourism and hospitality, ensuring better job opportunities and enhancing the community’s standard of living.
