Chaugan is a remote area located in the Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh, on the banks of the scenic Narmada River. The local community primarily relies on farming and forest produce for their livelihood. Chaugan is part of the Mahakoshal cultural zone and is home to the Gond tribe, with the region often referred to as Gondwana by Gondi speakers. The Baiga tribe, living in harmony with nature, is known for its deep knowledge of medicinal herbs, fauna, and flora.
The best way to connect with the villagers is by sharing a meal, where they offer a variety of traditional dishes and festival specialties, such as Mahua Latta, Kodu and Kutki rice kheer, Chana ki Bhujia, Cheela, and Bara. The village also boasts a rich cultural heritage, with performances like Karma Nritya (danced by tribal men and women), Rai Nritya (accompanied by dholak, nagadiya, jhanjhar, and ghungroo to folk songs), Bhajan Gayan (devotional songs sung with dholak and ghungroo), Sohar (community songs with dholak and manjira), and Gatha (storytelling of Gond myths, Ramayana, and other spiritual tales). Major events include the Kalapahad Fair, Bichchiya Fair, and Madhai Fair. Don’t forget to buy unique showpieces and decorative items crafted from Lantana.
