Pranpur: India's First Craft Handloom Tourism Village

Situated roughly 3 to 4 kilometers from historic Chanderi in the Ashoknagar district of Madhya Pradesh, Pranpur is celebrated as India's first craft handloom tourism village. Home to a vibrant community of approximately 450 weaving families, the village keeps a 200-year-old Chanderi weaving tradition alive through traditional pit looms operated directly out of local homes. Operative under the core initiative "Har Ghar Utpaadan Kendra, Har Ghar Bikri Kendra, Pura Gaon Bazaar"—meaning every house serves as a production and retail center, making the entire village a marketplace—Pranpur offers visitors a unique, immersive cultural experience. In recognition of its sustainable community-driven tourism model and rich artisanal heritage, the village was honored as the Best Tourism Village in the craft category by the Ministry of Tourism on World Tourism Day.
